Resident Evil 5 appears to have sold over400,000 across PS3 and Xbox 360 in Japan, lifting both consolessignificantly from the previous week. DS & PSP also had boosts onnew games and new hardware.
Jacob Mazel
Summary:
Resident Evil 5, along with new PSP colors, new DSgames and the growing catalogue software strength of Wii, PS3, Xbox 360and PSP contributed to a strong week across the board in Japan. Sincethe start of the second week in February the Japanese videogameindustry has seen Mario & Luigi 3, Street Fighter IV (on PS3 + Xbox360), Idol Master SP, Star Ocean 4, Yakuza 3, and Shin Sangoku 3 alldebut to sales of over 100,000 units. Combined with the Resident Evil 5launches this week, the 7th Dragon launch this week, and anongoing stream of big releases through 2009, and it is likely thatsoftware sales are going to end up recovering from their low levels inJanuary 2009.
Trends to Watch:
-
PS3and Xbox 360 should see a boost this week once again. Next week, Xbox360 will likely sink back down, but how quickly PS3 sinks down willprobably go a long way to determining when Sony has to cut price againin Japan.
-
Wiicontinues to hang tough around 20,000 per week, but with the FinalFantasy XIII demo for PS3 coming out in April it is conceivable thatPS3 could sell about as much as Wii in April (even with Monster HunterG), after outselling Wii in March.
-
DragonQuest IX has more preorders than the combined total for the next 18highest games in the data for this week. If the west suddenly has DSshortages in July, this game will be at the heart of the reason:Nintendo sent them to Japan
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying xgame for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in thepast, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform.Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides therounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, whileto the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the titlelikely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, andtherefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platformmarket share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like WiiFit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending March 8, 2009.
