SCE reports total PS3 shipments at 14.41 million units, and a near break-even result for the quarter: 5.4 billion Yen in operating profit (U.S. $50 million)
Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) presented the second profitable quarter since the launch of the PS3 (first one was Q3 last year). Q1 saw the release of important PS3 titles like Grand Theft Auto IV, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and Metal Gear Solid 4, which helped significantly boosting both hardware and software figures.
Results (SCE):
2007
2008
Sales and operating revenue
196.6
229.6
Operating Income (loss)
-29.2
5.4
Figures in Billion of Yen
* the reported operating profit of 5.4 billion Yen compares positively to a 29.2 billion Yen loss in the same quarter last year (U.S. $272 million at today's exchange rates)
* year-on-year, revenue increased by 25% in the first quarter to 229.6 billion Yen (U.S. $2.1 billion)
Hardware:
* PS3 shipments were 1.56 million in the quarter, a 123% increase YoY*
* PS2 shipments were 1.51 million in the quarter, a 44% decrease YoY
* PSP shipments were 3.72 million in the quarter, a 74% increase YoY
Software:
* PS3 - 22.8 million (+ 385% YoY)
* PS2 - 19.3 million (- 38% YoY)
* PSP - 11.8 million (+ 20% YoY)
Where overall hardware numbers were up from Q1 last year total software sales decreased as a result of decreasing PS2 software sales. This means that a 385% increase in PS3 software and a 20% increase in PSP software cannot compensate for a 38% decrease in PS2 software sales.
