Nintendo has sold over 1 million DS portables during Nov 22-Nov 28 period, which includes Black Friday in the United States - an all time record figure according to the company. Nintendo has announced that DS and Wii sales were strong over Black Friday week in the United States. Sony has also reported a hard number for Black Friday for the first time since the PS3 launched. Here is how the figures compare to previous years and sales of other systems:
Black Fri wk. 2007 2008 2009
Wii 350,000 800,000 550,000
DS 653,000 ~780,000 1,000,000+
PS3 ~155,000 ~130,000 440,000
X360 310,000 ~390,000 "double previous Nov week"
Microsoft has yet to report hard X360 hardware figures over Black Friday week 2009. In 2007, CNBC claimed that Microsoft sold 310,000 X360s during Black Friday week. Microsoft claimed that Xbox 360 sales were up 25% from Black Friday week 2007 during Black Friday week 2008. In 2007, Microsoft bragged it had beaten the PS3 2:1 over Black Friday. In 2008, Microsoft claimed it sold three systems for each system Sony sold over Black Friday week. Sony never verified the 2007 or 2008 numbers from Microsoft, thats why I have them in red. Nintendo claimed that DS sales were up about 20% from 2007 over Black Friday week in 2008 but did not give a specific number.
Update: Sony has spoken to Dean at Venture Beat, and is saying it sold 440,000 PS3s in the week ending November 29 based on key retailer figures.
Over the last two years, Black Friday has played a huge portion in November sales data in the United States. In 2008, 40% of Wiis sold in November by NPD figures came during Black Friday week. For DS, it was close to 50%. Xbox 360 Black Friday week 2008 sales were about 47% of November 2008 sales. For PS3, the figure was more like 35% in 2008 if the red estimate is correct. This would be in line with traditional views of Black Friday - that the day is an orgy of capitalism for the price-conscious shopper. Similar percentages for Black Friday week 2009 against November 2009 would mean DS would hit 2m in November, Wii would hit 1.4m, and PS3 (now at an affordable cost) would hit 900k. We'll have to see whether those figures pan out though. In 2007 the figures were not much different though. Black Friday week constituted 35% of all Wiis sold in November (rather than 40% in 2008), 42% of all DS systems sold in November (50%), 40% of X360s sold in November (47%), and 33% of all PS3s sold in November (35%).
