In line with historical trends, software and hardware sales are down sharply this week in Japan.
Jacob Mazel

Summary:

The roller coaster of Japanese sales seen everyholiday between late November and mid January has begun its descentfrom the apex of the few last few weeks. Hardware and software sales,in line with historical seasonal trends are down sharply in thepreliminary data. In the first full week of 2008, hardware salesdropped by roughly 50% across the board, and sales of the best sellinggames fell below 100,000 units. The preliminary data suggests that inthe full week of 2009, hardware sales are down sharply and that onceagain no game has topped 100,000 units.

Key Points:

-
Trendsin the transitional week from the Japanese holiday period to ‘normal’weeks suggest that the 2008 sales status quo has been maintained inJapan in 2009: DS > PSP ~ Wii > PS3 > PS2 ~ Xbox 360.
-
Preordersfor Dragon Quest IX are already enormous and grow at a faster paceevery day. Even DS, with 25m+ units in Japan should get a big boostfrom this game.
-
With software sales down sharply, titles from as far back as 2005 returned to the top sellers list.

Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying xgame for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in thepast, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform.Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides therounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, whileto the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the titlelikely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, andtherefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platformmarket share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like WiiFit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending January 11, 2009.

Software by Platform Breakdown:

Wii Software – Four Wii titles charted in thepreliminary data. The Animal Crossing game only sku sold 32,000 unitsas the top Wii game in the data. Following closely were Pikmin Wii andMario Kart Wii at over 20,000 units each. Wii launch title Wii Sportsalso charted with sales of 16,000 units. Expect Wii hardware sales todrop into the 40,000 to 60,000 unit range this week.

Gundam managed to sell another 15,000 units thisweek as well. Expect PS3 hardware sales to drop into the 8,000 to18,000 unit range this week.

As always, the top DS software features gameswith massive legs (Animal Crossing), breakout hits (Rhythm HeavenGold), famous third party franchises performing well (Phantasy StarOnline), and successful updates to older franchises which continue toenjoy success (Mario Kart, Pokemon, Kirby). Nonetheless, softwaretotals for DS are way down from last week. Expect DS hardware sales tobe down too – likely into the 115,000 to 145,000 units range.
