The Wii has joined the DS in outselling Sony's PSP, and will likely top SNES sell through in February or March 2009.
Jacob Mazel
Much ink has been spilled over the hardware baseof the Wii. Since the system launched in November 2006, venerablegiants of various gaming eras like the Atari 2600, Nintendo 64, SegaGenesis, Xbox 360, Xbox 1, Gamecube, Sega Saturn, PS3, and SegaDreamcast have all been outsold by the Wii. Now, Sony’s PSP has joinedthe list. With hardware sales in for the world for the week endingDecember 13, 2008 Wii has reached the homes of 42 million gamers, whilethe PSP sits in the homes and pockets of 41.62 million gamers.
Sales rates for the two devices are quite different:

Wii has been available for 108 weeks, 106 weeks, and 107 weeks in the three major regions. PSP has been available for195 weeks, 189 weeks, and 210 weeks. Both sets of availability timefollow the Americas, Others, Japan order. Given that Wii outsells PSPby 25% in Japan on a weekly basis to date, by nearly 130% in theAmericas, and by 80% in Others, Wii should easily be nearly double PSPsales worldwide at future comparable weeks of availability. In 108weeks, PSP sales were 8,117,457 in Others, 7,975,382 in the Americas, and 4,614,841 units in Japan, for a grand total of 20,707,680, justunder half of what Wii has sold to date. PSP should reach at least 60million before it stops selling, so it’s not hard to imagine Wiigetting within the mid 100 million range at the current rates itoutpaces PSP.
Nintendo shipped about 49 million SNES consoles inthe 1990s. Wii shipments should reach that level in February or March, and when Wii sell through passes 49 million units, you can look forwardto another Vgchartz piece like this one. |
