Overview
The PlayStation Vita continues to drop in sales and will probably fall below 100,000 next week. Overall six games debuted in the top 30 this week. Mass Effect 3 sold a combined 2.4 million copies in its opening week.
Software milestones this week in the top 30: Mass Effect 3 (X360) passed the one million mark in its opening week.
Hardware sales are down week on week across the board, and only the 3DS is up year on year. Overall sales are down by 17 percent week on week and down 24 percent year on year.
Worldwide Hardware
Week on week sales are down across the board. The 3DS is at the top this week with sales of 180,000 units, which is down 17,000 (-9%). The PlayStation 3 is down 46,000 (-21%) to 172,000 units sold. The PlayStation Vita is down 55,000 (-33%) to 113,000 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 15,000 (-11%) to 120,000 units sold. The Wii sold 79,000 units, which is down 11,000 (-12%). The DS is down 8,000 (-17%) to 39,000 units sold. The PSP sold 42,000 units, which is down 1,000 (-2%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are down 153,000 (-17%) to 745,000.
Year on year sales is down for every platform, except for the 3DS which is up. The PlayStation 3 is down 35,000 (-17%), the Wii is down 70,000 (-47%), and the Xbox 360 is down 39,000 (-25%). The PSP is down 97,000 (-70%) and the DS is down 188,000 (-83%). With the DS and 3DS combined it is down just 8,000 compared to the DS one year ago. With the Vita and PSP combined it is up 17,000 compared to the PSP one year ago. Total year on year sales are down 236,000 (-24%).
All three home consoles have dropped in sales for a second straight week. The PlayStation 3 has a 46 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 33 percent market share; and the Wii has a 21 percent market share. The PlayStation 3 is in first for an 11th straight week. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.
The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more nearly 5 to 1 and the Vita has outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by nearly 3 to 1. The PSP has a 52 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 48 percent. The 3DS has a 61 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 39 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita is up, while the other three handhelds are down.
Worldwide Software
Six games debuted in the top 30 this week. Mass Effect 3 (X360) debuted at the top with sales of 1.62 million, which is double compared to Mass Effect 2 (X360). The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number two with sales of 498,000, while Mass Effect 2 (PS3) sold just 90,000 in its opening week. The PC version debuted at number three with sales of 283,000, while Mass Effect 2 (PS3) sold just 37,000 in its opening week. The game launched in North America and Europe, and will be in the following weeks chart for Japan.
Stre et Fig hter X Tekken (PS3) debuted at number four with sales of 240,000. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number five with sales of 118,000. The game was released worldwide.
Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Mirai (3DS) debuted at number seven with sales of 88,000. The game launched in Japan, with no plans to be released elsewhere.
MLB 12: The Show (PS3) debuted at number 13 with sales of 71,000. The game launched in North America, with no plans to be released elsewhere.
Major League Baseball 2K12 (X360) debuted at number 16 with sales of 60,000. The game launched in North America and will release in Japan on April 26.
Kidou Senshi Gundam UC (PS3) debuted at number 20 with sales of 52,000.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include One Piece Pirate Musou (PS3) at number six with sales of 90,000. Just Dance 3 (Wii) is at number eight with sales of 84,000. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) is at number nine with sales of 83,000. SSX (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 81,000.
Week on week software totals are up for the Xbox 360 and 3DS, and are down for everything else. The Xbox 360 takes the top spot this week with sales of 3.11 million, an increase of 1.32 million (74%). The PlayStation 3 sold 2.40 million games this week, a decrease of 180,000 (-7%). Wii software sales are down 178,000 (-13%) to 1.17 million. The DS sold 499,000 games, which is down 136,000 (-21%). The 3DS sold 534,000 games, an increase of 25,000 (5%). PSP game sales are down 79,000 (-26%) to 224,000 games sold. The Vita sold 190,000 games, a decrease of 35,000 (-16%). Total combined software is up 741,000 (10%) week on week to 8.14 million.
Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and 3DS, and are down for the Wii, DS, and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 350,000 (17%), the Wii is down 676,000 (-37%) and the Xbox 360 is up 1.33 million (75%). The DS is down 3.24 million (-87%), the PSP is down 329,000 (-59%) and the 3DS is up 432,000 (424%). Total combined software is down 1.94 million (-19%) games sold year on year.
The Xbox 360 has taken the top spot for the first time since the week ending January 21. The Xbox 360 has a 47 percent market share, the PlayStation 3 with 36 percent, and the Wii with 17 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago the Xbox 360 is up and the PlayStation 3 and Wii are down.
The 3DS is back above the DS, while the Vita is below the PSP for a second straight week. The DS has a 69 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 31 percent market share. The 3DS has a 74 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 26 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita is up, while the other three handhelds are down. |
