Hey there. What's up your sleeve, Nintendo? I have grown up thinking that Nintendo knows what it's doing. It gave me Super Mario Bros., Link, Samus, and Mega Man. But I don't understand why the new Wii-U won't play DVD or Blu Ray discs. I just don't get it. Now, I know that the last few consoles didn't play them, but considering that the Wii-U would have great processing power, I would assume that that power would be put into good use. I guess not.

As physical media gets pushed away by cloud storage and streaming media, I can see why Nintendo would opt out of Blu Ray and DVD support. The big problem with this is that many of us already have a huge collection of movies sitting somewhere in our homes and if our gaming console is not going to play them, why would I buy one to display as my "entertainment" console? Even though I'm an Xbox kinda guy, that title goes to the PS3.  It can play streaming media, DVDs, and Blu Ray Discs.  At the moment, it does it all.  Gaming consoles are no longer gaming consoles.  They are entertainment hubs that branch out to many different forms of fun.  

Then again, Nintendo has always been willing to think outside of the box. Is Nintendo sacrificing the ability to play movie discs in orders to improve their console? It's possible. We've already seen some reports on how much more powerful it will be than the Xbox 360 and we all know that cloud storage and online media is slowing creeping into our homes.  Has Nintendo decided to take that leap and say, "Hey! Listen! Get rid of all that crap and enjoy it all on my nifty online entertainment device?" Interesting concept, no?  But will it be enough to entice consumers to buy their product?

There are no plans for a new Xbox or PS3 this year so Nintendo will have a head start on their competition.  But the more I hear about what the Wii-U can and can't do, the more I find myself not interested.  What do you think?  Later!
