NPD analyst Anita Frazier notes thatSkylanders Spyro's Adventureis not on the list due to character packs and software bundles falling into the accessories category. However, if those sales were taken into account, the game "would rank 4th in December, and 10th for Annual 2011 on dollar sales."
In addition,Star Wars: The Old Republicwas the 14th highest-selling title in December. Frazier also notes that "there is one title that would have fallen in the top 10 for December if we were ranking on an SKU basis rather than on a combined platform basis as we do now:The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Swordwas the 10th best selling software SKU for the month of December."
On the hardware front, Sony reports that PlayStation 3 saw "increases in hardware, software and peripherals year to date." The company also reiterated the stat that over6.5 million PlayStation deviceswere sold during December, which was previously revealed during CES.
Nintendoadds that 3.3 million total hardware units were sold during December. Aspreviously revealed, Nintendo sold more than 12 million hardware units total in the U.S. in 2011, and the 3DS alone has sold over four million units in the United States. The install base for Wii has reached 39 million.
Meanwhile,Microsoftclaims that Xbox 360 sold 1.7 million units in December, marking the twelfth straight month that Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in the United States. As revealed during CESearlier this week, over 66 million Xbox 360 consoles and more than 18 million Kinect sensors have been sold worldwide.
Frazier notes that sales for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were up 5% in 2011 and that "the Xbox 360 platform accounted for nearly 40% of annual 2011 new physical retail sales across all categories." She also wrote that Xbox 360 and PS3 "were the two platforms to realize a unit sales increase over last year. All other platforms declined in unit sales versus 2010 (save the 3DS which wasn't in market last year)." Finally, she notes that "Wii and the PS3 were neck and neck in second place for Annual 2011." |
