Eight games sold over 100,000 units thisweek according to the preliminary data. It was a hell of a week. Readon to see how your favorites performed.
Jacob Mazel
Summary:
By the looks of the preliminary data, Japan had its best week for videogame software sales since this week in December 2006, when 12 games sold over 100,000 copies. The preliminary data shows eight games selling over 100,000 units.Every platform had new compelling content this week, and the associatedincrease in hardware sales from the blockbusters appears to have liftedup a lot of software, especially on DS. In a bit of a surprise, onlyone PSP game charted in the preliminary data even though Final FantasyDissidia had a stellar debut. The other surprises in the data were thesharp increases in Animal Crossing and Taiko Wii sales, and the fairlystrong legs of the three versions of Gundam Musou 2. The final datashould show a hell of a week, regardless of any discrepancies betweenthese early sample estimates and the complete picture which will berevealed later in the week.
Key Points:
-
Software totals in the preliminary data tripled from last week, from over 700,000 games sold to over 2.1m games sold.
-
Anumber of titles were notably absent this week from the preliminarydata, as the depth of games to sell over 25,000 copies is likely closerto 30, 40 or even 50 rather than 20. Joysound, Fable II, Wii Fit, WiiMusic, Wii Play, Animal Crossing DS, Winning Eleven PS3, ProfessorLayton, Mario Kart Wii, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and others areexamples of titles which likely sold over 25,000 but did not chart inthe preliminary data.
-
DSgames took 12 of the 20 spots in the preliminary data, and managed tosell over 900,000 units, which appears to have been planned to offsetthe massive debut of Final Fantasy Dissidia on PSP.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying xgame for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in thepast, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform.Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides therounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, whileto the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the titlelikely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, andtherefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platformmarket share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like WiiFit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending December 21, 2008.
Software by Platform Breakdown:
Wii Software – The preliminary data showed aslight rise in sales for Namco’s Taiko no Tatsujin Wii even though thegame debuted last week. Normally, this would seem suspicious. However, there is reason to believe the rise will appear in the final data. TheTaiko series on DS has been quite successful. Additionally, the game isthe major Wii third party offering for the holidays in Japan andtargeted well for the audience. The other game to chart with increasedsales is the game-only version of Animal Crossing: City Folk. When thesku with the Wii Speak device is included, it is likely Animal Crossingsold over 160,000 on Wii this week. Expect Wii hardware sales to riseinto the 120,000 to 150,000 unit range this week.

That is aslight increase from the 175,000 units the first version sold on PS3 in2007 in its debut week. No other PS3 games charted in the preliminarydata, although as mentioned above, a few others likely sold over 25,000units for the week. Expect PS3 hardware sales to rise into the 45,000to 55,000 unit range this week.

PSP Software – Final Fantasy Dissidia was the onlyPSP title to chart in the preliminary data. Given that the titles whichcharted last week all sold less than 23,000 units, while no game skusin the data this week sold less than 23,000 units, its doesn’t looklike Disdia provided a big boost for PSP games. Nonetheless, FinalFantasy Dissdia did manage to sell 530,000 units according to thepreliminary data. The game is likely to be heavily front loaded butcould reach 1,000,000 units in Japan nonetheless. Expect PSP hardwaresales to rise into the 115,000 to 140,000 unit range this week.
