Crytek has told CVG that it fully intends to make Cry** 3, and that it already has a plan for how the series' story will progress.
However, the studio admits that the chances of a third game in the FPS series making it to market depend on the success of Cry** 2, which hits stores in March.
Asked if the studio has Cry** mapped out as a trilogy, or as an even bigger story, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said:
"We definitely want to make Cry** 3. I'm not making a formal announcement. We'd like to make Cry** 3 but the second game needs to be successful first. I will mention that there is a plan for how the fiction of Cry** should roll out, but again, it depends on the success of Cry** 2.
"If it doesn't meet our goals for whatever reason and doesn't even break even then there may not be a Cry** 3," he added. "But if it sells anywhere near what [Call of Duty] Black Ops has, there may be more from Cry**."
Last May, EA Partners boss David DeMartini told us of his desire to publish Cry** 3, 4 and 5 in future.
While Cry** is Crytek's flagship series, Yerli also said there's much more to come from the company, which is looking to expand its horizons beyond the FPS market.
"We have a bigger ability now to expand with more games. As a company we can't just make shooters, we need to breed genuinely new forms of entertainment and interactive experiences... The genre may not even exist yet for that matter, so what we're keen on is games that offer new experiences for every moment the gamer plays."
