Dragon Quest VI, which hadnever been re-made or re-released, debuted to sales of 900,000+ inJapan this week. It was not the only big game though: Ar Tonelico 3& End of Eternity opened well on PS3. Summary & A Look Ahead
It was RPG week in Japan. Square-Enix opened its vault once againfor the DS, choosing to release an updated version of SNES hit DragonQuest VI on Nintendo’s portable. The results were excellent – DragonQuest VI had an opening of over 900,000 on the DS. In distant secondplace, Sega’s End of Eternity debuted to almost 200,000 units acrossPS3 and X360. New Super Mario Bros. Wii fell slightly again for theweek, but the game sold nearly 100,000 units once again which is ofcourse pretty strong for a ‘week-nine’ figure.
With increases in DS and PS3 software, and the return of PS2 andX360 software to the preliminary data for the first time in weeks, PSPand Wii software dropped substantially. By mid-February we should havea good idea of how the platforms are going to perform in Japan, as thisis the last major push for software for many weeks in Japan with theexception of God Eater on PSP which may be capable of a 400,000 debutnext week. Its preorders stand at 225,000, way up from last week.
As I mentioned last week, with Nintendo’s investor relationsbriefing in, we did get some new release dates for key Nintendoproducts. GameFaqs has the long in-limbo Kirby Wii game releasing inJapan on March 20, 2010 though that is not confirmed, and Xenoblade(formerly Monando from Monolith) is supposedly releasing in “Spring2010” whenever that is. When other Japanese companies like Sony beginreporting their quarterly data for Oct-Dec 2009 later this week, weshould get some more release dates for big titles like Gran Turismo 5.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken downinto charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additionalcategories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the leftwill be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold forthe week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highestamount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data ispreliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. Thevarying platform market share the sample represents is why consistentsellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending January 31, 2010.
